If you’ve just installed an aluminium door, or if you’ve just had one installed on your home – congratulations! You have a beautiful new entrance point to welcome friends and family in style, and to act as a welcoming sight when you arrive home after a long day at work.
But how can you keep it that way?
Maintaining aluminium doors is quick and easy – certainly quicker and easier than other door styles like uPVC and timber – but it’s nonetheless important to get it right. That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide to cleaning your new aluminium door and keeping it looking its best.
What You Need
It doesn’t take much to maintain an aluminium door – just a few key implements, and a little bit of elbow grease every now and again.
The first thing you’ll need is a cloth and a bucket of mild soapy water. You’ll want to make sure that the cloth is non-abrasive, so you don’t end up intentionally scratching or damaging your aluminium door when you’re trying to clean it.
Alternatively, if you don’t want to use just soapy water, you can get specialised aluminium cleaner. This is likely only necessary if your door is particularly dirty – perhaps you live near a busy road or another source of pollution; or if you’ve recently experienced severe trauma to your door. Keep this in mind as an option if you need to, but soapy water and a cloth are often all you need to maintain an aluminium door.
Cleaning Your Door
First of all, focus on simply wiping down your aluminium door. This allows you to remove any light stains and understand how dirty your door may or may not be. If you clean your door regularly, or if your door simply hasn’t become that dirty, there may not be much more to it than this!
For any more intensive, obtrusive stains, you may need to apply a little bit of elbow grease. Again, don’t be too rough – as with the cloth, you don’t need anything harsh or to be too heavy-handed, or you could risk damaging your aluminium door when trying to maintain it. Additionally, if you do try to use aluminium cleaner, test this first on a small section discreetly, before you apply it everywhere, just in case you accidentally cause any damage.
Aluminium doors are inherently robust, so you shouldn’t need to put too much work in to get them looking their best. Soon you’ll have a door that looks just like new!
How Often Should You Clean Aluminium Doors?
As we’ve mentioned, you likely won’t need to clean your aluminium doors too regularly as they are excellent at resisting the elements and won’t suffer too much wear and tear over time. As such, when you clean your door is entirely down to you.
In most cases, you’ll only need to clean your aluminium door once every few months. This will vary based on where you live, but this is a general rule of thumb you can use as guidance – your own mileage will vary. One of the reasons many homeowners choose aluminium doors is because they’re very low maintenance, and this is reflected in how much (or more accurately, how little) you’ll probably need to clean it.
